Beautiful work. I know this one as Elephant Ear too.

Katrina Gunn replied:

Thank you! All of the more specific names I looked up are commonly called elephant ear, so that could be any of about half a dozen or more different plants.

Artist's Description

The mid-morning sun shines on the green leaves of the elephant ear plant in my pasture. When I asked in a local Facebook group what this plant is, I got a range of answers. Colloquially, it is called elephant ear, which is what I have been calling it. Most agree it is a colocasia or xanthosoma species, although another suggested it may be a taro. When I looked all these names up, the photographs of xanthosoma roseum most closely match what I have.

About Katrina Gunn

Katrina Gunn

I often joke that I learned to draw and paint because it is easier and quicker for me than getting a good photograph. I do still make the attempt to use my camera more effectively from time to time, but I have more natural aptitude to using a pencil or paint. Often what few photographs I am satisfied with become reference for my artwork. I work with charcoal, soft pastels, oil pastels, watercolor, acrylic, and am learning oil painting. I tend towards more realistic, although I have dabbled in impressionism when the fancy strikes. I live at the dead end of a dirt road in rural Florida with my husband and a yardful of critters, while the local deer and wild turkeys eat my annual efforts at gardening.
