Artist's Description
A notan is a minimalist drawing of only black and white, with not attempt at creating midtones or shades of gray. This is the stark essence of a lake shoreline landscape of the public boat ramp in Crescent City, Florida, with access to Crescent Lake, up to the St. Johns River and if you go far enough, the Atlantic Ocean. The palm trees in lines out the land spit to the far pier are rendered in black silhouette, as is the single lam post overlooking the launch ramp into the water. A concrete wall extends out parallel to the land spit, with a popular restaurant's tikki bar at the end of their private pier in the far right of the image. The dark line of trees show the far side of the lake.
Second in a series exploring the theme of silhouettes.
About Katrina Gunn
I often joke that I learned to draw and paint because it is easier and quicker for me than getting a good photograph. I do still make the attempt to use my camera more effectively from time to time, but I have more natural aptitude to using a pencil or paint. Often what few photographs I am satisfied with become reference for my artwork. I work with charcoal, soft pastels, oil pastels, watercolor, acrylic, and am learning oil painting. I tend towards more realistic, although I have dabbled in impressionism when the fancy strikes. I live at the dead end of a dirt road in rural Florida with my husband and a yardful of critters, while the local deer and wild turkeys eat my annual efforts at gardening.
